With documentaries such as Super Size Me and Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead, you’d think that most people would avoid fast food at all costs. However, this certainly isn’t the case here in the USA. According to Pew Research center, 50 million Americans eat fast food every day—with 34 percent of children between the ages of 2 and 19 consuming it daily.

Studies have also shown that people eat fast food regardless of income, so it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll choose the drive-thru because it’s cheap.

As reported in Vice, the researchers found that among those in the lowest 10 percent of income, 80 percent ate fast food at least once a week. Among the top 10 percent of income, the fast-food eaters comprised 75 percent. But it was those in the middle who were at the top: 85 percent of those surveyed in the middle-income group said they ate fast food at least once a week.

Whatever your reasoning for eating fast food, many strive to cut these diet choices out of your diet entirely—or at least eat far less of it. For our second September self-improvement tip, here is how you can help kick the fast food habit:

Starving After Work? Keep Proportionate and Convenient Snacks on Hand

There is no denying the convenience of fast food. Getting dinner by simply pulling up to a window and driving away can’t get any easier. If you’re starving on your way home from work, bring snacks with you to keep your hunger at bay. Several healthy and convenient snacks include:

  • A handful of almonds
  • An apple
  • A banana
  • Hard-boiled egg
  • Cheese cubes with grapes

These are a few grab-and-go snacks that will hold off your hunger until you get home from work.

Make Big Batches of Food for Freezer Meals

Believe it or not, you can have healthy and convenient meals at home if you’re willing to put in a little bit of work. Freezer meals have become a popular topic online, and there are plenty of opportunities to make meals for the following week (or weeks) ahead.

Here are a few quick tips on freezer meals:

  • Use high quality zip lock bags and write the name of the meal on the bag with a Sharpie
  • Prep multiple recipes by dicing all your onions at the same time, or brown all your hamburger or ground turkey in one batch
  • If you have a family of four and a recipe calls for six servings, double it to make it into three meals
  • Cool your food before freezing. Not doing so can result in freezer burn.

Say No to Fast Food Challenge

If giving up fast food for good seems a bit overwhelming, start by giving yourself a challenge. Try saying no to fast food for a whole week. If you have a serious fast food addiction, take baby steps and say no to fast food for a whole 24 hours. The longer you go without it, you’ll find It slowly becomes easier to say no.
